Today in History: US drops first atomic bomb on Japan

August 1945, World War Two, the largest armed confrontation the earth has seen is almost over.
Germany, which began the war has already surrendered in Europe and Adolf Hitler, the architect had shot himself three months ago.

But one nation is still standing strong, defying the victors and refusing to accept defeat.

Reports on the event say Japan was even planning another invasion; Indonesia, the target.

US President Harry Truman would have none of it. It was either Japan surrendered totally or face the consequences. The Asians remained unfazed.

Then, it happened; 75 years ago today, August 6, 1945, the United States of America dropped the first Atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima in Japan.

Hiroshima was chosen because of its military significance to the Asian country. 80,000 people died with as many as that number injured.

It took the dropping of a second atomic bomb three days later for Japan’s leader to surrender on live radio.
