Today in History: Man makes it to the moon
Today in history is a big one; the main author of the event described it as “one small step for [a] man and one giant leap for mankind.”
The journey to that day however, began when the President of US made the call on his people “I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to Earth.”
The decade long work – a time in which JFK who made the call was himself assassinated – materialized when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed the Lunar Module of the Apollo 11 on the near side of the Moon.
Neil Armstrong, a few hours later descended from the module and became the first man to step on the surface of a different planetary body other than the earth.
The event also ended the Space Race between the USA and the Soviet Union, the US of course, winning.
The moon landing on July, 20 1969 was televised across the world.
