Today in History: The Arab spring and fall of Egypt’s Mohammed Morsi
Mohammed Morsi, the fifth president of Egypt ascended to power following the resignation of Hosni Mubarak amid the Arab Spring.
The Arab Spring was a series of protests in North Africa and the rest of the Arab world. The veteran, Muammar Gaddafi was dethroned as part of these protests.
After the protests reached Egypt, Mabarak who had ruled the country for three decades was forced out of office in February 2011.
Following a transition period, Morsi and his Freedom and Justice Party won election with some 51% votes and assumed the reins.
However, excesses and economic challenges led to rising protests against Morsi’s regime.
On this day, July 3, in 2013 General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi removed him from office in a coup d’état a after a month of continuous protests.
