Today in History: United States annexes Hawaii islands
Today in History, we talk about the Hawaii islands.
For starters, Hawaii is one of the 50 states in the United States of America. They gained statehood in 1959.
Although the history of habitation of the chain of islands, located in the Pacific Ocean dates back to 124 AD, they were only brought to the fore in 1778 when British explorer James Cook sailed there.
It is worth noting that 1778 was two years after the independence of the US from Great Britain.
122 years after their independence The U.S. Congress annexed Hawaii through a joint resolution signed by William McKinley, the 25th President of the US.
It happened on this day, July 7, 1898.
Hawaii would remain a territory until their statehood in the 20th century.
Hawaii may not be known to you because they are outside North America and quite detached from US mainland but they are the immediate reason the US joined World War Two.
Pearl Harbour, is located on the Hawaii islands.
